Resort Reviews

This page will include any resort reviews I have conducted. Hopefully, these will help making holiday decisions easier.
Each resort will be given a mark out of 100, broken down into the following categories:

  • Vertical / Skiable Area: 15 marks
  • Climate: 15 marks
  • Terrain variety: 15 marks
  • Pricing: 10 marks
  • Lift System: 10 marks
  • Grooming: 10 marks
  • Staff: 10 marks
  • Accommodation: 5 marks
  • Rental Equipment: 5 marks
  • Ski Patrol: 5 marks
N.B. I have already done a review of Espace Killy (Tignes-Val d'Isere). The marks allotted in this review were not weighted as above. I will adjust them and repost accordingly.

Espace Killy (Tignes-Val d'Isere)

Justification for Weighting
I thought I would supply clarification on the reason why I have assigned the marks related to each of the ten criteria above.

  1. Vertical / Skiable Area (15 marks): An extremely important factor in determining a good ski resort. The larger the area, the more spread out everyone becomes. Also, bigger vertical means longer runs, which is also a key component.
  2. Climate (15 marks): This includes the general climate of the area, the snow quality and season length. Season length is important because it gives you more opportunities to miss the crowds on long weekends. Snow quality is important for obvious reasons. General climate can be important for comfort levels and determining what to wear. All of these are very important factors in determining a good ski resort.
  3. Terrain variety (15 marks): An essential. Lots of terrain variety means you can keep doing new things every day.
  4. Pricing (10 marks): Not quite as important as the preceding 3 criteria but can still change your opinion of a resort. Only includes lift tickets, season pass and ski school prices.
  5. Lift system (10 marks): The more high-speed lifts the better. Age of the system, location, length and efficiency also key factors.
  6. Grooming (10 marks): Amount of terrain groomed and the quality of the grooming.
  7. Staff (10 marks): Includes lift ops, ticketing, mountain restaurant and guides. Whether they are visible, approachable and friendly are essential.
  8. Accommodation (5 marks): Not the most important thing in the world (I'll sleep anywhere for a day at the snow). But needs to be mentioned. Pricing, location and quality are all factored in.
  9. Rental Equipment (5 marks): For me, its not a big issue as I own my gear. However, its not usually all that hard to find a good store. Shop around, look at prices, get recommendations from the locals.
  10. Ski Patrol (5 marks): Most of us won't need them but the visibility of ski patrol means more peace of mind whilst enjoying the snow.
